Trebuchets could fire larger loads faster simply by adjusting the relative lengths of the arms and the mass of the counterweight this made them very versatile. This then give tension to the wood and when released the arm pulls up. The catapult has proven to be a very effective weapon during ancient times, capable of inflicting great damage. I cannot find why trebuchets are better than torsion-catapults, but here is my guess: trebuchets were much easier to scale up than mangonels. Catapults generally used a large, springy piece of wood which would have been wound up. The three primary energy storage mechanisms are tension, torsion, and gravity. The rope would try to get back into its original position, rapidly untwisting itself and moving the arm forward at great speed, throwing the projectile(s). Once all the way down, it would be latched into place, loaded, and released.

Think of it as a see-saw, except one arm of the see-saw is very long and the other is very short. Trebuchets use a counterweight and a lever to throw an object.
